Vorweg - dies ist mein erstes Artbook von Pixar und ich habe mich sehr darauf gefreut, hatte aber gleichzeitig befürchtet, dass es vielleicht nicht wirklich interessant sein könnte. Dem ist nicht so! Bereits das Vorwort von Regisseur Pete Doctor ist so persönlich und witzig geschrieben, dass man sich vorkommt, als habe man das Familienalbum aufgeschlagen. Auch ansonsten fühlt man sich diesen Künstlern dadurch nahe, dass sie so tiefe Einblicke in ihre kreativen Prozesse, aber auch in ihre ganz persönlichen Lebensprinzipien und -ideen, gewähren.Nach besagtem Vorwort folgt ein kurzes Kapitel, in dem einiges zum Entstehungshintergrund der Geschichte von Oben gesagt wird, begleitet bereits mit einigen ersten Skizzen. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind eigentlich durchgängig so aufgebaut, dass zuerst ein längerer Infotext kommt (2-3 Seiten, sehr interessant zu lesen (englisch!)). Dann folgen unterschiedliche viele Seiten mit Artwork und Kommentaren verschiedener Künstler aus unterschiedlichen Abteilungen.Das zweite Kapitel (und das längste) heißt "Seeking simplexity". Wer wissen will, was es mit diesem Begriff auf sich hat, sollte sich das Buch holen :-). So viel sei gesagt - es befinden sich auf den folgenden Seiten sehr viele Charakterdesigns (aus der ersten Hälfte des Films) verschiedener Stadien der Produktion, vorne weg v.a. von Daniel López Munoz.Im nächsten Kapitel geht es um die Entwicklung des Hauses und es ist erstaunlich, wie viele Gedanken sie sich deswegen gemacht haben - und wie viel man davon im Film wieder spürt und sieht. Auch Color scripts sind hier enthalten.Anschließend wird erzählt, wie Pete Doctor gerade auf diese unbekannte Gegend im Regenwald gekommen ist und es wird in Bild und Text von der Expedition dorthin berichtet (wer die DVD-Extras kennt, hat bereits ein wenig davon gesehen). Auch Kevin, der Vogel, wird hier genauer beleuchtet, ebenso wie die Hunde und der alte Muntz und sein Zeppelin.Ich kann dieses Buch jedem, der den Film oder einfach Animation an sich, liebt, nur empfehlen. Die Texte sind wirklich interessant und ich werde den Film beim nächsten Mal sicher mit etwas anderen Augen betrachten, aber auch die Bilder sind einfach sehenswert!
Das ist echt ein super Buch für alle Disney Fans da draußen!Was ich Überraschend fand, ist das unter dem Umschlag das Adventure Book aus dem film eingeprägt ist echt super!
If you're still wondering about the real story of Pixar's Up, this book provides very good clues (or spoilers). I'll just say it's about Carl, the old man, going on a journey in search for meaning to his life. The directive from the top was to make Up "the studio's most emotive film to date".Tim Hauser has provided a good writeup into design style and production process of the movie. There's talk on the story arc, themes, the characters and a bit on the artistic side of production, like visiting a jungle for the research. The Pixar story team provided lots of quotes giving great insight into the story process. On the technical side to animating, nothing much is mentioned.The challenge for this movie is aimed at simplicity. The character designs are based on simple shapes like squares (Carl), ovals (Russell, balloons), bullets (dogs), etc. I've the impression there are less sets and characters compared to other Pixar movies. There seem to be only the city, the sky (flying objects) and the jungle (big). You can see the focus is going to be on the characters.The art included are character designs, storyboards, color scripts and few environmental paintings. Descriptions for the illustrations come in the form of quotes. There are lots of character sketches for the main characters, Carl, Russell and the house. Readers looking for the plot will find that in Lou Romano's colour scripts. It seems that there's a new (to me) character designer, Daniel López Muñoz, doing plenty of character sketches.What you're not going to see are film stills, background paintings and pastels. No idea why but the number of background paintings always pales in comparison to non-Pixar art books. And there's only one pastel painting from Dominque Louis. I miss the pastel paintings included in earlier movie art books.This book is really more for Pixar fans.PS."Hey this doesn't look like one of Pixar's better art book is it?", a colleague remarks to me. Vielen Fans die die Art of-Bücher von PIXAR bereits kennen sei vorab schon mal gesagt, daß dieses Buch zum Film UP! den Vorangegangenen in nichts nachsteht! Man bekommt glücklicherweise nur Concept Art serviert und keine Film Stills, denn diese haben in einem Art of-Buch (größtenteils) nichts verloren! Eine wahre Wonne sind diesmal die Character Designs von Daniel Lopez Munoz, die sogar einen relativ großen Teil der hierin befindichen Studien ausmachen...ein Meister seines Fachs, der ohne Probleme in einem Atemzug mit Größen wie Craig Kellman und Joe Moshier genannt werden kann. Auch Arbeiten von Lou Romano sind wie bspw. schon in THE ART OF THE INCREDIBLES wieder vertreten. Hiervon hätte ich mir allerdings noch etwas mehr gewünscht, denn ich habe Werke von ihm zu diesem Film gesehen, die leider NICHT in dem Buch gezeigt werden, jedoch auf alle Fälle ihren Platz verdient hätten. Layout und Chronologie der Kapitel orientieren sich beim bewährten Konzept der anderen PIXAR Art of-Bücher, dessen Besitzer bei diesem Buch sowieso zugreifen werden, allen anderen sei gesagt: Gesellt euch auch zu diesem Kreis!
